Sir,

With reference to Mr. (now Sir Thomas) Southorn's [87m 72835/2. despatch No.238 of the 29th April, 1930, I have the honour to inform you that I have appointed Mr. John Johnstone Paterson provisionally and subject to His Majesty's pleasure to be an unofficial member of the Legislative Council in succession to

Mr. B.D.F. Beith whose term of appointment expired on March

14th, 1934.

2. Mr. Beith left the Colony shortly after his appointment

and the provisional and temporary appointment has been held by

Mr. Paterson since the 17th April, 1930. In accordance with the provisions of paragraph (III) of Article XVI of the Koyal Instructions the period of Mr. Paterson's definitive appointment

will be reckoned from that date and will therefore expire on

the 16th April, 1934.

I propose accordingly when the time comes to re-appoint

him provisionally and subject to His Majesty's pleasure for a

further term of four years.

A copy of the instrument appointing Mr. Paterson is

enclosed together with the list of the present members of the

Legislative Council required by Colonial Regulation 175.
